The
Gallatin River
The
Gallatin River is located just west of Bozeman and is known for it’s
abundance of fish and it’s unbelievable scenery. Starting
about 70 miles south of Bozeman and flowing North following U.S. Highway
191 most of its length, the Gallatin has easy access and is a great choice
for wade fishing all year long.
Current Conditions & Fishing Strategy 07/29/10
Hopper fishing has been picking up on the Gallatin, especially here in the Gallatin Valley. Seems like smaller hoppers are still attracting more fish to the surface mid-day. In the evenings, Caddis and PMD Spinners seem to be out in large numbers and the fish have really been on them. If you find yourself in the middle of a great Caddis hatch but the fish seem to be refusing your fly, try a Rusty Spinner to mix things up a bit and you might be surprised. Up in the Canyon stretches, the fish still seem to be looking up for large attractor dries like Parachute Hoppers and Golden Stone patterns. Fishing a bead of any sort below the big fly can be quite productive. Recommended Fly Patterns Nymphs-
