Fly Fishing Rods

Sage Fly Rods have been one of the most well recognized and sought after fly rods for quite some time now.  Founded in 1980, by legendary rod designer Don Green, Sage was created.  Since then, Sage has been setting the bar in the high performance fly rod department.

When you buy a Sage rod, you know the model has be thoroughly tested and tweaked until it was the highest performing rod possible.  The R & D department at Sage is one of the best in the business.

Here at The River’s Edge, we carry a good selection of the best trout, saltwater, and specialty rods from Sage.  These include the One, Method, Circa, XI3, and VXP.

Sage Method Fly Rod

The Sage Method is the newest high performance fly rod from Sage.  This rod is for anglers looking for a rod that will give them ultra high line speeds, precise accuracy, and great feel.  One of the fastest action rods in the Sage line-up, the Method is built for the fisherman looking to cast the biggest flies, fish into heavy winds, and land the biggest of fish.

The Method was designed with Sage’s Konnetic Technology.  The whole idea behind Konnetic Technology is to reduce weight, while adding power and accuracy to the rod.  It is a fine balance between building a rod that is enjoyable to cast all day long, yet is capable of fishing in any conditions.  Many companies have tried, but have come up short in durability or the ability to fish all day long.  Sage has succeeded with this fly rod.

Designed and Built in Bainbridge Island, Washington, the Sage METHOD was created with both the beginning angler and experienced caster in mind.  The Method is a fast action rod with a lot of power behind it.  However, when lined correctly, the rod loads fast and is a true pleasure to fish for both the most experienced angler and the angler needed a quick loading rod to learn on.  Because it is a fast action rod, we do recommend fishing a line that is a half weight heavy.

The Method comes in both Freshwater and Saltwater sizes.  The freshwater sizes range from 4-6 weight, while the Saltwater sizes run 6-11 weight.

The Method comes in various sizes including the following:

  •  Freshwater: 490-4, 590-4, and 690-4
  •  Saltwater: 691-4, 697-4, 790-4, 796-4, 7100-4, 890-4, 990-4, 1090-4, 1190-4

The Freshwater sized Method rods come with a Cocobolo Wood Reel Insert with Black components, and a Snub Nose, Half Wells Premium Cork Grip.  The Saltwater sizes come with a Black Aluminum Reel Insert, Black Saltwater approved components, and a Full Wells Premium Cork Grip with a fighting butt.

All Method rods come with a Black rod sock and a Fusion Red powder coated aluminum rod tube.

Sage Salt Fly Rod - 2015

There was a need in the market for an ultra-fast, "Salt" action fly rod, built specifically for big flies, big fish, big wind, and big water. Because of this, Sage Fly Rods has introduced the Sage Salt Fly Rod.

The Sage Salt Fly Rod is built with Sage's well known Konnetic Technology®, found in their other rods such as the Sage Method and Sage One. With the integration of Konnetic Technology®, Sage was able to create a fly rod design that had never been previously done....A stiff, fast action taper, with a light in-hand feel, capable of generating very high line speeds without the need to ice your shoulder at the end of a full day of casting to tailing Bonefish.

The Salt's taper allows the user the versatility to use the rod in many different situations. Delicately delivering flies to spooky bonefish in 6" of water? There is a Salt rod built for that situation. Need to get that quick shot out to that 100lb tarpon that magically appeared out of nowhere? There is a Salt rod built for that.

In addition to the Konnetic Technology®, the Salt has many other great features such as oversized Fuji ceramic stripping guides, oversized hard chromed snake guides and tip-top, and a great integrated hook keeper in the reel seat. Other features include:

  • Salt Action
  • Dark Sapphire Blank Color
  • Black thread wraps with silver trim wraps
  • Oversized Fuji ceramic stripping guides
  • Oversized hard chromed snake guides and tip-top
  • Heavy-duty, Stealth Black anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat
  • Integrated hidden hook keeper in reel seat
  • Laser etched rod weight on slide band
  • Super Plus full-wells cork handle
  • Black rod bag with Electric Blue logo and model tag
  • Electric Blue powder coated aluminum rod tube with Sage medallion

The Sage Salt is available in 12 different size/length variations from a 9' 5-weight for light streamer work, to a 9' 16-weight for the biggest and baddest of saltwater fish.

winston boron III x fly rod

The Winston Boron IIIx is one of the finest trout rods on the market today.  The Winston “Green Rod” production has been centered in the small town of Twin Bridges, Montana, about 90 miles from our shops, since 1976.  However, Winston Rods has been around since the early 1930s.  There is no doubt, when you pick up a Winston Boron IIIx, that you are picking up a fly rod of the highest quality available, a fly rod that if properly taken care of, will last you a lifetime.

Whether you want to cast tiny dry flies to picky trout on Depuy’s Spring Creek, or hit the banks and strip your favorite big, articulated streamer for big Brown Trout on the Yellowstone River, the Boron IIIx series will have you covered.  Ranging in size from a 8’ 6” 3-weight to the 9’ 10-weight, the Boron IIIx series has a rod size for any freshwater fly fishing situation you may encounter, as well as most saltwater situations.

The Boron IIIx is classified as a medium-fast action rod.  It is not the traditional slow “Winston” feel like rods in the past such as the Winston WT, but that doesn’t mean it is lacking in the “delicate touch” department.  The Boron IIIx has plenty of power in the butt section to wear down a big trout, but is soft enough to protect light tippets.  The same goes for the saltwater and streamer sizes.

Winston utilizes Boron technology in the Boron IIIx series of fly rods.  Boron on its own is a very light material, but is 5x stronger and 2x stiffer than steel.  Winston has successfully incorporated Boron into its high-end graphite rods, something that many other rod companies have attempted, but failed.  The utilization of Boron has allowed Winston to create a lighter, yet significantly stronger fly rod.  The light in-hand weight that the Boron IIIx has is unmatched by any other fly rods, and increases the anglers touch, sensitivity, and power in the hook set.  In addition, the overall reduced weight reduces fatigue on the angler and creates a more pleasant day on the water.

In addition to the integration of Boron, the Winston Boron IIIx utilizes the highest quality components available in the build of the rods.  Chrome Nanolite stripper guide and chrome plated snake guides are used on the Boron IIIx as well as the finest cork pieces available to build the cork grips for the rods. The grip type varies based on the model of rod.  Grip type goes as follows:

  • Cigar on 8'6" 3wt.-9' 5wt. and 9' 6wt.
  • Full Wells on 10’ 4wt.
  • Full Wells with fighting butt on 9'6" 5wt., 9'6" 6wt. and 7wt.-10wt.
  • Half Wells special on 5wt. JWF
  • Half Wells special with Fighting Butt on 8wt. JWF

Choice of nickel silver with burled wood insert or anodized aluminum on 8'6" 3wt.; 8’, 8’6”, 9’ 4wt.; 8’6”; 9’ 5wt.; 9’ 6wt, all other rods anodized aluminum only.

The Boron IIIx comes with a rod sock and premium graphite rod tube.

winston boron III sx fly rod

The Boron III SX is a brand new fly rod from Winston Fly Rods.  The Boron III SX is the fastest action rod in the Winston family of fly rods and is built for the angler seeking a very high-performance piece of equipment.  The SX is perfect for the saltwater angler or streamer fisherman.  It is light in the hand, making it a joy to cast all day long, but also very powerful, making it easy to punch flies into the wind to a tailing bonefish.  The Boron III SX is part of the “green” rod series, hand made in Twin Bridges, Montana.

The Boron III SX is the fastest action rod in the Winston lineup.  If you’re chasing big fish, throwing big flies, or fishing in big winds, or just enjoy a very fast action rod, this is the tool you need to add to your arsenal.  While “SX” does stand for “super” fast action, the unprecedented power and strength of these rods does not come at the expense of smoothness and feel.

Winston utilizes Boron technology in the Boron III SX series of fly rods. The light in-hand weight that the Boron III SX has is unmatched by any other fly rods, and increases the anglers touch, sensitivity, and power in the hook set.  In addition, the overall reduced weight reduces fatigue on the angler and creates a more pleasant day on the water.

In addition to the integration of Boron, the Winston Boron III SX utilizes the highest quality components available in the build of the rods.  Chrome nanolite stripper guide and grey titanium hard coated wire snake guides are used on the Boron III SX as well as the finest cork pieces available to build the cork grips for the rods. The grip type varies based on the model of rod.  Grip type goes as follows:

  • Cigar on 9’ 4wt, 5wt, and 6wt.
  • Full Wells with Fighting Butt on 9’6” 5wt, 6wt.
  • Full Wells with Fighting Butt on 9’ 7wt-12wt.

Choice of nickel silver with burled wood insert or anodized aluminum on 9’ 4wt, 9’ 5wt. and 9’ 6wt., all other rods anodized aluminum only.  The Boron III SX comes with a rod sock and premium graphite rod tube.

winston rod company

Winston Fly Rods are with out a doubt some of the finest rods on the water today!  Since 1929, when Robert Winther and Lew Stoner first started engineering Bamboo fly rods, the companies attention to detail has been obvious.  Their work  was recognized immediately and they earned a repuation for performance and and exeptional quality.  After several owners, Tom Morgan purchased the company in 1973.

In 1976, the company was moved from San Franscisco to it's current location in Twin Bridges, Montana.  Winston Rods moved to the center of world class fly fishing on water such as the Beaverhead River, Big Hole River, Missouri River, and Madison River.  Winston has been building high quality and high performance fly rods in Montana for almost 40 years now, and they have been doing a great job.  With the integration of Boron Technology into their Boron series of rods, Winston has only increased their popularity in the high quality fly rod market.

Currently, Winston has expanded the Boron series of rods to include a fly rod for nearly every fly fishing situation an angler might come across.  Below is the break down of the fly rods from Winston Rod Company.

The ONE is a fast action fly rod from Sage.  Built off of their Konnetic technology, the ONE is great for the angler looking for multiple uses for one fly rod.  By blending both accuracy and power into one, Sage was able to develop a fly rod that could perform in many different situations.  From Saltwater to big double nymph rigs to delicate dry fly fishing, the ONE is the one rod series for the job.

Designed and Built in Bainbridge Island, Washington, the Sage ONE was created with both the beginning angler and experienced caster in mind.  The ONE is a fast action rod with a lot of power behind it.  However, when lined correctly, the rod loads fast and is a true pleasure to fish even for the beginning fisherman.  Because it is a fast action rod, we recommend fishing a line that is a half weight heavy.  Because of the versatility, this rod is a great choice for the fishing guide, or angler looking for a rod they can fish multiple sized flies with.  With a properly lined 6wt. Sage ONE, the good caster can expect to comfortably fish flies ranging in size from a #18 Parachute Adams to a #2 Sculpin Pattern.  When the wind is calm and the fishing is all about presentation, the Sage one can produce very delicate presentations by having enough power to turn over a longer leader setup.  However, when the wind picks up, because of that power the angler will still be able to produce a tight loop, punching into the wind.

The Sage ONE utilizes the finest components available such as Fuji Stripping Guides and Hard Chromed Snake Guides.  In addition, the rods feature a high-grade custom tapered cork grip.  Because of these components, and the high quality graphite used, the ONE is one of the nicest fly rods on the market today.

The Sage ONE is offered in a wide range of sizes including the following:

Example = A 691-4 is a 6-weight, 9’ Rod with a fighting butt.  A 7100-4 is a 7-weight, 10’ Rod.

All Sage ONE rods come with a powder coated black rod tube with a Sage medallion.

Sage Circa Fly Rod

In Sage’s search of a fast action rod, they re-invented the slow action rod.  The Sage Circa is a dry fly fisherman’s dream rod.  Loading down deep into the butt section, the Circa is built for delicate presentations, long leaders, and light tippets

Feeding trout can be awfully spooky when the sun is high and the water is clear.  In order to effectively present a fly to them, the angler needs to be on top of his game.  A precise cast, a delicate presentation, and a drag free drift is essential.  The Sage Circa is built for this.

The Circa features Sage’s patented Konnetic technology, allowing them to reduce weight while keeping the overall performance of the rod at an extremely high level.

Designed and Built in Bainbridge Island, Washington, the Sage Circa was created with dry fly fisherman in mind.  The Circa is certainly a slow action rod with a ton a feel behind it.  With the proper casting stroke, this rod is a real pleasure to fish.

The Sage Circa utilizes the finest components available such as Fuji Stripping Guides and Hard Chromed Snake Guides.  In addition, the rods feature a high-grade custom tapered cork grip.  Because of these components, and the high quality graphite used, the Circa is one of the nicest fly rods on the market today.

The Sage Circa is offered in a wide range of sizes including the following:

Example = A 279-4 is 2 weight, 7’ 9” Rod.
