The Winston Boron IIIx is one of the finest trout rods on the market today. The Winston “Green Rod” production has been centered in the small town of Twin Bridges, Montana, about 90 miles from our shops, since 1976. However, Winston Rods has been around since the early 1930s. There is no doubt, when you pick up a Winston Boron IIIx, that you are picking up a fly rod of the highest quality available, a fly rod that if properly taken care of, will last you a lifetime.
Whether you want to cast tiny dry flies to picky trout on Depuy’s Spring Creek, or hit the banks and strip your favorite big, articulated streamer for big Brown Trout on the Yellowstone River, the Boron IIIx series will have you covered. Ranging in size from a 8’ 6” 3-weight to the 9’ 10-weight, the Boron IIIx series has a rod size for any freshwater fly fishing situation you may encounter, as well as most saltwater situations.
The Boron IIIx is classified as a medium-fast action rod. It is not the traditional slow “Winston” feel like rods in the past such as the Winston WT, but that doesn’t mean it is lacking in the “delicate touch” department. The Boron IIIx has plenty of power in the butt section to wear down a big trout, but is soft enough to protect light tippets. The same goes for the saltwater and streamer sizes.
Winston utilizes Boron technology in the Boron IIIx series of fly rods. Boron on its own is a very light material, but is 5x stronger and 2x stiffer than steel. Winston has successfully incorporated Boron into its high-end graphite rods, something that many other rod companies have attempted, but failed. The utilization of Boron has allowed Winston to create a lighter, yet significantly stronger fly rod. The light in-hand weight that the Boron IIIx has is unmatched by any other fly rods, and increases the anglers touch, sensitivity, and power in the hook set. In addition, the overall reduced weight reduces fatigue on the angler and creates a more pleasant day on the water.
In addition to the integration of Boron, the Winston Boron IIIx utilizes the highest quality components available in the build of the rods. Chrome Nanolite stripper guide and chrome plated snake guides are used on the Boron IIIx as well as the finest cork pieces available to build the cork grips for the rods. The grip type varies based on the model of rod. Grip type goes as follows:
- Cigar on 8'6" 3wt.-9' 5wt. and 9' 6wt.
- Full Wells on 10’ 4wt.
- Full Wells with fighting butt on 9'6" 5wt., 9'6" 6wt. and 7wt.-10wt.
